since "time flew like a rocket" and it's already my last year in the mtown, i decided with my friend that we will do a "food journey" in montreal, which is most famous for its widely varied and scrumptious dishes (except from chinese food, seriously. it's like crap compared to the ones in TO, not to even mention HK: P)
- station one - Les Givrés
me and selva had always been eating out in proper dining restaurants, and as a sweet-tooth like me, i decided to go try something that gives us brain-freezes before the winter starts creeping in again, which is already right at the corner : ( better go crash with the icecream rather than actually being frozen by the winter chills!
Les Givrés is one of the most famous icecream places in montreal, because of their ordinariness in all the products they make. From the icecream cone to the fluffy little mashmallow they put in their caramel icecream, everything is made by themselves in the store. One of the biggest "tourist spots" is their icecream cone machine and the transporter which transits the cones from the machine all the way to the icecream serving station.
ta-da! doesnt it look like a sky train for the ice-cream cone world? lol
unfortunately, there weren't so many people when we got there so they didn't have to make the icecream cones so we couldn't actually witness the holy process of the cone-making : ( but i scraped a few photos of the machine online and damn that machine looks legit!
their selection of icecream flavours were not exceptionally large... about 15-20 choices i would say, which is pretty good for a small-sized store like this. their flavors are not completely novel either, with quite a lot of safe choices for people who don't like to experiment with new food. after a couple times of picking and trying, i decided to try their passion-fruit sorbet, and also their chocolate-ginger macaron.
fruit de la passion!
the passion fruit icecream was a little bit too sweet for me honestly, but the texture of the sorbet was exquisite. It's really icy but once it's in your mouth you can feel the creamy texture melting in which is not very commonly found in other sorbets i've had. The first taste of the icecream was a perfect balance of the sweetness and the sourness, but as you go on you'll find that the sugar kinda overwhelmed the original sourness of the passionfruit. Nonetheless, it tasted very natural and it's NOT AT ALL like the chemical syrup of the "passion fruit shaken tea" from starbucks. ew even the mentioning of it gives me chills.
chocolat gingembre macaron
the little confectioner i tried was the chocolate-ginger macaron. The combination sounded interesting and i felt like treating myself something adventurous so i went for it. i originally expected it to be sweet and more chocolaty with hints of the spiciness of the ginger, but to my surprise the macaron is actually not sweet at all (it might be because i finished the icecream first tho lol) and it tasted more bitter rather than sweet. totally opposite to my anticipation, the sweetness actually came from the ginger part (more like gingerbread sweet), and the bitterness actually came from the chocolate, which makes it a very interesting yet quite pleasant combination. im personally quite fond of the gingerbread taste, and the bitterness of the chocolate definitely gives the macaron much more depth for the taste buds. The chewiness and the moist of the cookie is also a plus, which doesn't take away too much focus from the creamy chocolate buttercream in the middle.
oh and one of the best things about this place: 10% off for students : D yay! AND the serving ppl were still really nice even after *someone* has mistaken the tip box as the trash bin and threw in the used spoons LOL yea i am THAT stupid.
selvie and her double scoop of caramel icecream with roasted mashmallow (Crème glacée caramel et guimauve maison grillée) and praline icecream (Crème glacée pralinée maison) : D
ex-science matey love!
i originally did not intend to write a food review, but i guess i couldnt help but re-savoring it ; ) andddd i am still gonna write my letters.... hopefully soon lol
adios!
